Qatar warned the public on Sunday against the unauthorized use of license plates with the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup logo, after it auctioned dozens of plates for hundreds of thousands of dollars. “Copying and mounting the World Cup logo on vehicle number plates is prohibited,” the Home Office tweeted, warning that violators would face legal action. “The number plate with the World Cup logo is a special edition released under specific terms and conditions in cooperation with FIFA … and only for special number plates to be auctioned.”

Fifty license plates bearing the World Cup logo were auctioned off in May, with the most expensive one costing 1.8 million Qatari riyals ($494,000).

In May, Qatari authorities said five people had been arrested “for advertising the sale of clothing bearing the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 logo without the prior approval of FIFA”, the organization that defends its trademark.

This comes after authorities last year raided a perfume factory packed in World Cup-branded bottles without arresting anyone. There is no official perfume.

FIFA is the governing body of world football and Qatar will host the World Cup from November 21 to December 18.
