NORTHFIELD, N.J. — Columbia freshman Michelle Piyapattra carded an even par 72 Friday to the lead field on day one of the 2011 Ivy League Women’s Golf Championship at Atlantic City Country Club.
One third of the way through championship play, Yale leads the team standings with a combined score of 310 (+22), followed closely by Harvard in second at 313 (+25) and Penn in third at 314 (+26). Paced by Piyapattra’s 72, Columbia stands in fourth at 321 (+33) while Princeton is fifth (324, +36), Dartmouth is sixth (326, +38) and Brown is seventh (331, +43).
Piyapattra opened the day with a birdie on the par-5 one before dropping to +2 with a double bogey and bogey on two and three. She quickly got back on track, however, with 11 pars, three birdies and one bogey to finish with the lone par of the day.
Harvard’s Mia Kabasakalis scored a 75 for the second lowest score of the day. The Crimson senior had two birdies and three bogeys on the front nine, then completed the back nine in 37 strokes for her three-over final score.
Penn’s Rui Li and Yale’s Seo Hee Moon both shot a four-over 76 in their opening round, finishing in a tie for third. Moon was one of three Bulldogs to place in the top five as her teammates Harriet Owers-Bradley and Alyssa Roland both carded an opening-round 76.
Rounding out the top five places in the individual standing was Brown’s Megan Tuohy who had four birdies on her way to a first-round 76.
Round two play begins Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at the Atlantic City Country Club. All players will tee off hole one in eight minute intervals with pairings based on Friday’s scores. The 2011 Championship concludes on Easter Sunday, starting at 7:30 a.m.
