The Russian 2nd seed overcomes the first big challenge at the Australian Open after 4 sets in the 2nd round match on January 20.

Daniil Medvedev has lost to Nick Kyrgios twice before in 2019, but he won’t let this happen in the third time. The 2nd seed overcame pressure from the home crowd cheering for Kyrgios to win. 7-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 after nearly 3 hours of competition.

“I came here to win this game and I’m glad I did. We both had strong serves. In sets 2 and 4, I tried to have more control at times. The important thing is, I just want to play my best, hit good shots and hopefully that will be enough to do something,” ATP quoted Medvedev as saying after the match.

Kyrgios did everything to make it difficult for Medvedev. He constantly complained to the referee, buying time, serving low or smashing the racket. However, Medvedev did not seem to mind when he remained cold and made few mistakes. The Russian player launched 31 direct serves, the first ball scored 85%, had 68 winners and made 29 self-defeating errors (two fewer than Kyrgios).

After the first 3 sets were played with a balance, Medvedev showed his bravery in set 4. He successfully saved the break in the first game. After drawing 2-2, the Russian player won 4 games in a row to end the match, with the opponent’s forehand error.

With this victory, Medvedev raised his own hard court record in the last 2 years. The 25-year-old won 13 matches and lost only one at the Australian Open and US Open, winning her first Grand Slam title in New York.

In the third round, Medvedev will meet Botic van de Zandschulp, after the Dutchman beat Richard Gasquet 4-6, 6-4, 4-0. Gasquet gave up after that.
